Spats at the Grill capitalizes on its prime position along College Ave. Perched on the second floor of the Hotel State College and Company building, the main dining room offers a panoramic view of Penn State’s Pattee Mall and Old Main. Since Spats debuted in July, the bird’s eye view and the menu of modern American fare have earned the restaurant local fans.

Grab a specialty cocktail such as the Tequila Blueberry Smash and enjoy it over some shared appetizers, perhaps the fried gator bites or the crusted brie with jam and rice crisps. Then dig into one of the contemporary southern entrees. The cornmeal-fried catfish comes with a side of crawfish etouffee, while the beef short ribs simmer in red wine before getting paired with cheesy grits and roasted Brussels sprouts.
